I love working in black and white, using pen or brush and ink. I did a lot of work in that medium at one time. This was done for a Federation of Canadian Artists themed juried show - Black and White! It's quite a challenge to work in only three of four tonal values. I've been working to tight deadlines which doesn't leave a lot of time for reflection and touch-ups. I'm pleased with this one, but as with all creative endeavors there is the "after the fact" review... and a whole bunch of ideas I wish I'd incorporated. Next time. |

To the right - Breakfast Icon. It's been accepted into a Federation of Canadian Artists juried show "Still Life", March 29 - April 10 at the Federation Gallery, Granville Island, Vancouver, BC. I chose acrylic for this icongraphic approach to a familiar subject. The idea has been in my head for years, ever since I cut up an orange on a plate on this place mat. |

I like the contrast between the colour of the orange and the purple mat. Although the original idea used a yellow plate, I found this oriental plate a more intriguing background. |

Studio students and neighbours Megan and Thea each made a print for Valentine's day. We're not well equipped in the press department, but our invention - the floor press - worked well. See photo below. |

News from the Sculpture and Artisan Department with Jodi Forster |

|
Jodi continues to work on a collection of hide masks formed over a carved wooden mask. The series will represent the Four Directions and Four Elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water). The first mask completed is Air and it is embellished with bird images and feathers. See below
The mask sculpture in the foreground is part of Jodi's Ronin series.

Jodi is pleased with her first hide mask. She's been dreaming of casting hide on some of her carved masks for awhile.
Jodi is also in production mode with her popular shell rattles, constructed with hide and leather on local beach shells. The two below are a new experiment in creating a hide "hyperculum" (a natural trap door used by the snail), to enclose rattle components deep inside the shell. A hide band supporting feathers and gems completes the rattle.
