Dianne Bersea's acrylic paintings at show opening Doesn't this look wonderful? This is the opening of "Transitions", a new show by four artists, at The Old School Arts Centre, Qualicum Beach, BC. Show runs April 14 to November 9th. Eight acrylic landscapes by Dianne grace the wall behind the pianist.

Who knew what would transpire when Manzanita Muse Studio (and resident artists) needed to make a big move? Not I certainly, but move we did and it's turned out very well. In the midst of moving and setting up anew - workshops, mentorships and the miracle of creating art somehow carried on. And despite the expectation that all the activity (including a newly acquired B & B) would be overwhelming, just the opposite is true. We are both invigorated by the activity, the new horizons and all the fascinating people who are joining us along the way. Here's a visual journal of some of the highlights.

Here's Dianne up a ladder at the workshop studio in Fort St. John. This workshop for the Peace Arts Gallery in early September was a major highlight for Dianne who thrived in the northern environment. As Dianne wrote to a friend "There were sled dogs right outside the studio, and moose in the woods all around. It felt really northern and we were able to get out walking some lovely trails during our lunch break. Lots of fall colors everywhere, from deep red to bright yellow. And the group did some marvelous work." A small portion of that work is on the wall behind Dianne who took advantage of the large studio space and the availability of a ladder to create a lively salon style gallery of participants work. "We had fun discovering how much there is to paint, even when we just go outside and plunk ourselves down in an unexpected spot. Anything is possible!" Sled Dog
A classical photo - artists at work
Above a sled dog awaits the Fort St John snow season and the exciting sport of Ski-jouring where-in a team of dogs pulls a cross-country skier. It sounds wonderful but not for the unfit or faint-of-heart. Photo to left - workshoppers sketching en plein air, learning how to capture the essense of the view in simple lines and indication of three tones to paint later in the studio. The results are evident, see left.

Art workshop at Island Rest
These enthusiastic artists joined Dianne for three days of private classes. In addition to a good time, we learned lots of new watercolour techniques.

Summer art workshops were enhanced by our new facilities. Lovely fenced yard, large private B & B suite, additional studio and gallery space have already contributed to successful classes. Weekly classes in watercolour, life drawing and other creative projects are planned for this winter for those who live on Cortes or would like to take an off season holiday. See info about our B & B in side-bar to right.

Jodi is back into carving and she's delighted to be working with the buttery ease of freshly cut alder. This is a new mask project and Jodi already has a second one on the go. Jodi's new carving and shell preparation set-up at the back of the studio looks like it will work well. It's interesting to see how we can set up now that the studio is settled in its new location. It's also wonderful that so much could remain exactly where we've always had it. Although the addition of a large dry storage shed has made it possible to have a lot more room for each of us within the studio itself. A BIG BONUS!!

This is Dianne's current work-in-progress. Sorry folks, it's already spoken for!

Over this winter Dianne will be working on a number of large acrylics, wild watercolours and a new whimsical landscape. New images will be added to the web site over the next few months so please drop in again.
