I love maritime history and watching the activity of working boats. In my career as an exhibit designer I produced the concept for the opening exhibits (1994) at this cannery, a National Historic Site. Later, when I undertook this painting for a juried exhibition at the cannery, I became inspired to visually recreate the entire history of the coastal fishing industry as represented by the cannery. It's all here..., from Haida canoes to contemporary aluminum drum seiners, and everything in between. Note the land vehicles from different eras too. The housing in upper right is circa 1950. I even put myself in the picture, painting from a rooftop. Painting is currently on display at the Campbell River Maritime Heritage Centre, Campbell River.
