Dianne Bersea - Whimsical Landscapes of the Canadian West Coast
Gorge Harbour, Cortes Island, Discovery Islands, British Columbia

"Gorge Harbour"

This whimsical view captures the summer-time activity at the Gorge Harbour and Gorge Harbour Marina. This sheltered body of water has probably sheltered life of all forms, human and wild since the beginning of time. Native burial grounds, defensive works, pictographs, aquaculture (ancient and modern), all have had a place within the Harbour. The well thought out improvements at the Gorge Harbour Marina include a swimming pool, restaurant and state of the art wharfage. This waterfront playground is attracting a whole new world of people to share our marvelous island.

If you look out beyond the Gorge itself, the narrow passage at upper center, you'll see the south end of Cortes Island and to the right Marina Island. The mountains in the distance are on Vancouver Island.

"Gorge Harbour, detail"

In the process of drawing these whimsical images, I've noticed that Cortes is quite unique for the highly indented nature of our coastline. We have coves, cays, bays, inlets, and lagoons scattered along our coast. It makes for a very interesting place to explore.
