"Powell Islet View"
acrylic on stretched canvas Size 36 x 36"
The process through which my more developed paintings evolve is a complex process indeed. This painting is inspired by an on-site watercolour that I painted when I explored the bluffs beyond the north side of Cortes Bay. I can still remember sitting there for hours accompanied by the occasional mink that scurried along the rocks below, and a small pod of porpoises that blew and dived and played back and forth for a few minutes. That's one of the big attractions for me as an artist. I get to sit quietly listening and looking for hours on end. Usually, after a few minutes the world goes on as if I'm just another rock or tree. I like that. I feel accepted. I often think that sketching and painting outdoors is a way of honoring that environment, by being present to it. I call it "bringing my attention to."
