I've had the good fortune to spend time out on the west coast of Vancouver Island, as a child on a light house station, a hiker on portions of the famous West Coast Trail and more recently as a visitor to the Tofino and Long Beach National Park Reserve. The power of the wind and ocean are in evidence everywhere. Trees on the outer west coast rarely make it to any great height, the tops blown off respeately until they take the shape of the prevailing winds. This particular group of trees on a point near Chesterman Beach attracted my attention right away. I took a huge collage of photos, then did a detailed study with pencil and coloured pencil on drafting vellum. Then I started seeing elements within the drawing that begged for a painting. I've had it in my mind to do this as a 3 panel painting for several years. It began with a watercolour of course!
