This painting began in the first few years I lived on Cortes Island. I often filled a pack with art supplies and a snack and set off for the day along the bluffs and bays around the outside of Cortes Bay. I also kayaked along that area frequently. A series of sketches and photos resulted which also became more developed watercolour paintings. This image started as a extreme vertical, about 12 x 28", and included trees and shrubs on the top of a sheer rock cliff with some of the lower rocks tumbled into the ocean foreground. I was quite pleased with the upper part of the bluff and later did another watercolour 20 x 20" of just that area. This painting is the next step, a closer look at some of the trees and shrubs, a very stylized look in fact. In each step, everything became brighter and brighter with more subjective color. I love this interpretation!
