On a Living Oceans sponsored trip into the high-tidal flow channels north of Quadra Island, I did sketches of the clear-cut mountain slopes. The boat was moving slow enough that I could sketch as we motored along. On that trip I collected a number of sketches and photos that have provided reference for other paintings. Although clear-cut logging is a questionable practice, the open areas on the mountains are quite dramatic. It's like looking into the sculptural structure of the mountain, at the skin beneath the cloak of trees.
