Many of my acrylic paintings begin from on-site sketches and watercolour studies. Sometimes a photograph is the departure point, especially if the scene can only be accessed from the water. This painting began as a photograph taken from a morning boat trip to Melanie Cove on the east side of Desolation Sound. As we crossed the sound the view north into Lewis Channel and the obvious weather front created a striking and typical west coast image. I actually painted this from a watercolour that was my first departure from the photo. I like moving further and further from my original reference, and further and further into my own interpretation.
