I love the attitude of this little hemlock... ready to fling back and release itself from its snowy mantle. In January we had a lot of heavy wet snow, inevitably accompanied by a power outage. Unfortunately the studio is heated by electricity. No power, no heat, so I set up in the house next to the woodstove, with a sketchbook and watercolour pencils. I sketched the view from the window and created a very satisfying image that evolved into this painting.
