"Sacred Grove"

Sacred Grove began as another painting entirely. On a beautiful spring day at least ten years ago, I build a stone sculpture at Carrington Bay on Cortes Island. It was a lazy day, perfect for poking about the broken rock on the beach and adding them to my sculpture against a larger standing stone. When it seemed to be just right I photographed the tableau. Some time later I made a painting from the photo. I was quite pleased with it, with it's strong abstract qualities. Much later I played with mirror imaging and overlaying elements of the painting. As I have discovered many times before, something new appears and I reinterpreted the painting using those elements. The figure became quite strong and I felt myself falling into the image and the title Sacred Grove. Its protectress became one of my most intriquing and popular images.
